As a career coach with over 20 years of experience, I’ve helped thousands of professionals prepare for job interviews. One thing I’ve noticed time and time again is that many candidates underestimate the power of preparation and struggle to clearly articulate their unique value. The good news is, there is so much within your control that can help you leave a lasting, positive impression.
In this blog, I’m sharing the top 7 tips and strategies along with common pitfalls to avoid, so you can walk into your next interview with confidence and clarity.
Research is essential. To stand out, you need to show that you’ve taken the time to understand the company and the position.
Get to know the company’s mission, values, recent projects, and the department you’re interviewing with. Reflect on how your experiences and skills align with the role. Prepare personalized examples that clearly demonstrate your fit and enthusiasm.
Example:
“I was impressed by your recent partnership with local schools to expand after-school programming. In my previous role, I formed similar collaborations that led to impactful initiatives. I’d love to contribute that same energy here.”
As a strengths-based coach, I encourage all candidates to reflect on what they bring to the table.
Ask yourself:
When have others recognized your skills or talents?
What projects made you feel proud or fulfilled?
What strengths do you lean on when facing challenges?
What types of problems do you enjoy solving?
Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to tell your story in a clear and compelling way. Avoid vague answers like “I’m a hard worker” or “I’m a team player.” Instead, provide real-life examples that show how you add value.
Technology can be a great support tool as you prepare for interviews. Here are a few favorites:
Yoodli.ai
This free mock interview platform gives detailed feedback on your clarity, tone, pace, and filler words. You can even customize the interview based on the role and interview style.
ChatGPT
You can use this tool to generate interview questions based on a specific job description. Ask it to act as an interviewer or request feedback on a drafted response. Just remember, your responses should reflect your own voice and experience. AI is great for brainstorming, but you bring the human touch.
Don’t let simple things stand in the way of success.
For in-person interviews, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Bring extra copies of your resume, a list of references, and a portfolio if relevant.
For virtual interviews, test your internet, camera, and audio. Choose a quiet, well-lit space free from distractions. Avoid taking interviews from your car or noisy environments. These details matter and can influence how you’re perceived.
People hire people, not just resumes. Let your personality shine through.
Dress professionally, keeping the company culture in mind. Show your enthusiasm, be authentic, and don’t forget to smile. Avoid speaking negatively about former employers. If asked about a difficult situation, focus on how you learned or grew from the experience. Keep it professional and solution-oriented.
The interview is also your opportunity to evaluate the company.
Prepare a few questions that show you’re engaged and thinking about long-term fit. You might ask:
What are some immediate goals for this position?
What do you enjoy most about working here?
Can you tell me more about the team I’d be working with?
You can also ask about challenges in the role, exciting upcoming projects, or what success looks like in the first 90 days.
A thoughtful thank-you note can leave a lasting impression.
Send an email within 24 hours of your interview. Mention something specific that was discussed and reaffirm your interest in the role. If you interviewed with multiple people, try to send personalized notes to each one. This is also a great opportunity to emphasize any strengths or examples you didn’t get to highlight during the interview.
Job interviews are more than just a step in the hiring process. They’re your chance to showcase your experience, personality, and enthusiasm to contribute your skills and expertise.
Prepare with intention. Reflect on your strengths. Practice sharing your story with clarity and confidence. You’ve done the work and now it’s time to shine.
